Description
This Coral Gables residence expresses a refined interpretation of tropical modernism, balancing clean contemporary geometry with warm natural materials and strong indoor-outdoor connectivity. The architecture is organized as a series of low-slung pavilion volumes surrounding a central courtyard and pool, creating a composition that feels both expansive and intimate while maximizing natural light, privacy, and landscape integration.
Deep roof overhangs with exposed wood soffits and structural tails establish strong horizontal lines while providing critical solar shading for the South Florida climate. The restrained material palette — smooth white stucco, limestone cladding, warm wood accents, and black aluminum glazing systems — creates a sophisticated contrast between softness and precision. Large floor-to-ceiling impact glass openings dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, allowing the living areas to fully engage with the courtyard, pool terrace, and tropical landscaping.
The entry sequence is carefully choreographed through a minimalist motor court featuring permeable pavers and a framed approach to the front door. Decorative patterned tile walls introduce texture and regional character, subtly referencing Mediterranean and Latin American influences common to Coral Gables architecture while remaining firmly contemporary in expression.
A defining architectural feature is the internal courtyard garden, which acts as both a biophilic focal point and a natural light well for the surrounding circulation spaces. Extensive glazing around the courtyard creates layered transparency throughout the residence, producing constantly shifting reflections of landscape, sky, and water. This strategy enhances the sense of calm and openness while maintaining privacy from the street.
The front elevation is composed asymmetrically with varied roof heights and vertical screening elements that add rhythm, scale, and depth to the façade. Horizontal wood louvers provide solar control and visual screening while reinforcing the home’s modern tropical identity. The overall massing remains intentionally low and grounded, allowing the residence to integrate gracefully within the lush Coral Gables streetscape rather than overpower it.
Project performed in collaboration with the renowned Alan Schulman Architects serving as Design Architect, with RIODAS Architecture Studio acting as Architect of Record. Together, the collaboration merges a strong conceptual architectural vision with technical execution expertise, resulting in a residence that is both architecturally expressive and highly responsive to the climatic, regulatory, and construction demands of South Florida luxury residential design.
